ORISE Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Natural Resource Economics

Research Statement

Driven by the goal of promoting the efficient use of natural resources under a changing climate, my research agenda focuses on exploring the complex interactions between the environment and socioeconomic systems. I aim to assist policymakers, resource managers, and communities in understanding and optimally responding to environmental changes. To meet these objectives, I prioritize the careful development of comprehensive datasets, rigorous quantitative analysis, and transparent communication. My research addresses policy-relevant questions that bear implications for the sustainability and resilience of economic systems, as well as the responsible management of natural resources. The scope of my current work can be broadly classified into two categories: (1) adaptation to water scarcity in arid and semi-arid regions and (2) weather and climate change impacts on aggregate economic activity.

In my current research I employ economic theory, optimization methods, and an array of econometric modelling strategies to explore the effects of drought on perceptions of water scarcity and irrigation technology adoption, the economic efficiency of different water allocation mechanisms, and county-level impacts of weather and climate on agricultural profits. In addition, I have engaged in collaborative, interdisciplinary projects in water resources, including the development of hydro-economic modelling frameworks to conduct supply analyses in the Western US. My current research portfolio demonstrates my proficiency in applying a wide range of quantitative techniques—ranging from difference-in-difference and fixed effects regressions to nonlinear optimization of water allocation and trading models—to address policy-relevant questions.

My previous research and master's thesis assessed the relative merits of coalescing unsupervised machine learning techniques with applied econometrics in the context of fruit and vegetable demand. Moving forward, I plan to further incorporate machine learning and AI tools into my research.
